Precious tuberoses, tulips, narcissi, lilies and hyacinths, perennial wallflowers and valerians, modest carnations and campanulas..., Louis XIV regularly visited his fruit and vegetable gardens, which were enriched by the botanical expeditions that became commonplace in the 17th century. In 1676, Denis Dodart, the King's physician and a member of the Académie des Sciences, began work on a faithful description of the "Recueil des plantes du Roy", also known as the "Histoire des plantes". Each plant is the subject of a life-size reproduction, and the most subtle aspects and characteristics, from the roots to the petals, are reproduced with great precision of drawing and astonishing virtuosity in the rendering of tones.
