The Writings of the Louvre par M/M (Paris)
M/M (Paris) decided to explore many departments of the Louvre Museum to create their project, photographing fragments of writing from different periods.
From the earliest written documents in human history to the signature of Nicolas Poussin, M/M have assembled a series of artworks details into their WORLD OF M/M typography. Made up of modular geometric components, it has the ability to conveys meaning by conjuring up images within the text it carries. Used here to write the name of the LOUVRE, it describes the diversity of the museum as a library of inscriptions in all languages and a vessel of infinite stories.
The collection also features a new version of M/M's most simple character, The Agent. It creates no friction, has no gender, nor race, betray no emotion, and refers back to a time when low-resolution digital outlines seemed to be a thing of the future. As a metaphor for how M/M work, it plugs in, learns and moves on, changing with each outing, acquiring meaning and generating a memory. In the context of the LOUVRE, The Agent dresses itself with a reversed image of Mona Lisa, a reflection of the painting from a viewer's perspective, sitting atop or traveling around I.M. Pei famed Pyramid.
The collection, called LES ECRITURES DU LOUVRE (The Writings of the Louvre), gives visitors to the museum the opportunity to explore the possibilities of graphic design. Combining their original typography with historical writings and The Agent as a platform for stories, ideas and reflections, M/M challenges the viewer to think beyond the obvious representation of the past and proposes a blend of art, design and fashion in a way that transcends space, time and culture.
