The Franco-German war of 1870, the fall of the Second Empire, then the Paris Commune pushed many artists settled in France to take refuge in the United Kingdom. London represents a safe haven for artists leaving Paris, but the choice of their destination is also guided by the idea that the art market and is more buoyant. Their exhibited works, and in the cases acquired by English collectors, provide British art and institutions with a breath of modernity. Conversely, the experience of exile across the Channel exerted a new influence on French art.
