Brassaï (1899 - 1984)

Gyula Halász was born in 1899 in Brassó, Hungary. His artist's name Brassaï means "From Brassó" in reference to his hometown. Brassaï is a polyvalent artist, in addition to photography he is also interested in different mediums, from painting to drawing and writing. He is particularly known for his shots of Paris at night, the success of which has earned him the nickname "the eye of Paris". In addition to his photographs of Paris, the artist also published a collection entitled "Graffiti", thus becoming one of the first to recognize graffiti as an art form in itself. Brassaï was also noticed as a director and his film "Tant qu'il y aura des bêtes" (As long as there are beasts) won a prize at Cannes in 1956.
