Despite the many pages that have been devoted to the Palace of Versailles, the genesis of its gardens remains somewhat mysterious. An art historian by training and long-time chief architect of Historic Monuments in charge of the estate, Jacques Moulin offers a fascinating historical synthesis, from its creation in 1623 to its current conservation.
Using numerous unpublished documents and a careful rereading of archives preserved in France and abroad, this work highlights the many interventions that have shaped the gardens, the role of its successive master builders and the wishes that have accompanied its development from Louis XIII to today. This first volume is devoted to the period from the creation of the gardens to the death of Louis XIV.
