BILINGUAL FRENCH / ENGLISH
Published to coincide with the carte blanche given to artist Prune Nourry for the Visionaries exhibition at the Petit Palais, this bilingual publication aims to shine a light on female sculptors that have been largely overlooked by history. Often relegated to the roles of models or muses and severely curtailed by social norms and limited access to training, they struggled to carve out a place for themselves in a field long dominated by male figures. Addressing their persistent absence from art historical texts and museum collections, Prune Nourry presents a new series of eighteen busts highlighting sculptors who were active between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-artists selected, with the help of researchers and curators, for the quality of their artistic practice and the strength of their convictions.
The featured artists include Sarah Bernhardt (France), Hélène Bertaux (France), Selma Hortense Burke (USA), Camille Claudel (France), Daria Gamsaragan (Egypt), Käthe Kollwitz (Germany), Jane Poupelet (France), Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (USA), Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry (El Salvador), and more...
