In the mid-19th century, the restoration of the stained glass windows in Le Mans Cathedral led to the rediscovery of the secrets and skills of the master glassmakers of the Middle Ages. Le Mans became one of the French capitals of glass painting, with works spreading throughout the country and beyond its borders, illuminating cathedrals, churches and chapels. Around 1900, the art of stained glass opened up to the civil and public spheres.
Albert Echivard, from the Sarthe region, created superb decorative windows for private residences. During the 20th century, great names such as Maurice Denis, Auguste Alleaume, Gabriel Loire and Max Ingrand made their mark. Today, the Le Mans region remains a land of stained glass innovation, with numerous bold contemporary creations. The exhibition 'Peindre la lumière' (Painting Light) retraces this prodigious epic in the Sarthe region, which transcends space and time.
