Represented hunting, in portrait, in combat or in the guise of the fable, the animals of Jean-Baptiste Oudry are essential references of the animal kingdom in images. However, the career of this painter of undeniable success was notably launched with the commission by the princes of Condé of three paintings for their castle of Chantilly in 1725. Scattered during the French Revolution, this hunting triptych showing wolf and deer hunts and the fox is recomposed at the castle on the occasion of this exhibition. Many of the artist's drawings, kept at the Condé museum or in private collections, are also published for the first time in this catalog. An extraordinary set of illustrations by Oudry for La Fontaine's Fables constitutes its hard core and the essays which compose it address subjects as varied as the fortune of these drawings in the decorative arts, Oudry's drawing technique, the long editorial adventure which made it possible to engrave his illustrations to reproduce them in sumptuous editions ofLa Fontaine's Fables in the 18th century or even the influence of Oudry on the famous American artist and naturalist John James Audubon. Taken together, these new studies demonstrate the undeniable success of Oudry's compositions and the true "Oudrymania" which has gripped artists and art lovers alike to this day.
