Standing in the heart of Paris since the twelfth century, Notre-Dame Cathedral was built by and for the city, changing its face. Far from being just a stone construction, whose architectural and aesthetic prowess never ceases to fascinate, Notre-Dame is above all an urban and global historical phenomenon that has been part of the long term, since before the Gothic cathedral. It is from this observation that Boris Bove and Claude Gauvard, accompanied by fifteen of the best specialists, started to retrace the history of this cathedral, which, for a long time remained the symbol of a city, now belongs to the World Heritage Site, to the point that the destruction of its spire during the great fire of 2019 moved the international community.

More than a hundred iconographic documents and a dozen original maps shed light on this object of study, at the crossroads of religious, social, political, cultural and urban history.
