A timeless and universal symbol, Liberty Enlightening the World, Dreamed and then Made by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, was conceived as a gift from France to the United States to commemorate the centenary of American independence of 1876. Installed in 1886 on Bedloe's Island, at the entrance of New York, it is the result of artistic, ideological, economic and technological choices that allowed the realization of this extraordinary project. Through numerous sculptures, photographs, engravings and paintings, and thanks to the contributions of international specialists, this book traces the genesis of this statue that has become an icon, the technical challenges encountered as well as the financial and dissemination strategies that have allowed the realization and fortune of this masterpiece. The result of an incredible human adventure, the Statue of Liberty also reveals the taste of Bartholdi and an era for monumental and staging.
