In conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the Musée national de Préhistoire from 8 October 2022 to 8 May 2023, this catalogue presents, in a transchronological approach and thanks to contributions from the best current specialists in these subjects, the latest archaeological and scientific research on oxides, both in the form of colouring materials with a wide range of uses and as metallic objects. The result is an invitation to observe pre- and protohistoric societies in their technical, daily, cultural and symbolic relationships with these materials.

The thematic contributions are enriched with notes highlighting collections that are still often unknown to the National Museum of Prehistory, as well as objects loaned by more than fifteen French or foreign institutions.
