This souvenir medal is a tribute to one of the greatest figures in French history, Louis XIV, known as "the Great" and "the Sun King" (1643-1715).
The visual face of this medal is illustrated with the bronze statue Equestrian Statue of Louis XIV, located on the Place d'Armes in Versailles designed by Pierre Cartellier.
Commissioned by Louis-Philippe and installed in 1836 by the architect Frederic Nepveu, the original of this statue is made of two independent bronze sculptures, the horse sculpted by Pierre Cartellier and the rider made by Louis-Messidor Petitot.
The reverse side shows a view of the central part of the gate of the Palace of Versailles.
