"Pictures of the French Revolution" is an ambiguous title which, in the ignorance of a particular content, immediately refers us to painting. However, the complete collection of the Tableaux historiques de la Révolution française is a chronological succession of important events of the French Revolution, each presented by a text and illustrated by an engraving.
This collection having been conceived in the dynamics of the current events that it relates, with a more or less long delay, constitutes an exceptional example of writing and contemporary representation of History.
The principle of the Tableaux was to put a text and an image side by side, the whole claiming to give a faithful vision of the great events of the Revolution.
Published on the occasion of a symposium held on the theme of The Revolution: Writing an Immediate History (September 2005), the present volume offers a comparative presentation of the successive drafts of the first fifty speeches
