In the Renaissance, as in the Middle Ages, heraldry was present in all places and in all strata of society: it was both a marker of identity and a mirror that reflected mentalities.
Combining texts of great thematic variety with a large selection of works of art of all techniques, this book aims to shed light on the different forms of use throughout the French 16th century. Coats of arms, mottos, emblems, numerals and liveries, far from being an exclusive and cryptic language, make up a shimmering ensemble that accompanies exceptional moments as well as everyday decor.
