Heir to obscure ancestral superstitions, the vampire reached a high point in literature in the 19th century with three Gothic novels: Le Vampire, Carmilla and above all Dracula by Bram Stoker. But it is cinema that will popularize this terrifying and fascinating being: from Murnau to Jarmusch, via Dreyer, Polanski, Coppola, Bigelow and Burton, without forgetting genre films (parodic, erotic, science fiction).
The vampire is like a metaphor for cinema, the art of embalming and death at work. But the vampire is also a political allegory, a danger that destabilizes the social body around him. He is charged with eroticism by his sexual frenzy and the freedom of his choices, opposes bourgeois codes.
Television, comics, comics, comics and manga have finally created the pop vampire of the 21st century, now funny, seductive and even cool.

A rich iconography: Warhol, Goya, Basquiat, Bouguereau, Van Dongen, Munch, Kubin, Mike Kelley, Niki de Saint Phalle, Wes Lang, Claire Tabouret... as well as film archives, photographs of actresses and actors who played cult vampires, magnificently illustrate this sum.

Exhibition at the Cinémathèque française from October 9th 2019 to January 19th 2020.
