Born in Italy to american parents, the painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) spent most of his career in London and most of his life traveling. Paris will be much more than just a stopover for him. When he moved there in 1874, the capital was bustling and the brilliant young artist found his way there. Trained in the workshops of Carolus-Duran and Léon Bonnat, Sargent seduced of all Paris. Through the virtuosity of his touch, the strength of his portraits and the elegance of his gaze, he imposes his singular style. The French community artistic saluted this extraordinary talent, which sometimes shocked, before recognition gradually gave way to a certain mistrust... and to oblivion in the 20th century.
One hundred years after his death, this exceptional retrospective, bringing together nearly 130 major works, shines a new light on Sargent's parisian period - undoubtedly the most decisive and vibrant of his career.

Exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay from 23 September 2025 to 11 January 2026.
