The Houses were painted in Céret (Pyrénées-Orientales), the painter's more or less forced residence from 1919 to 1922. Indeed, Léopold Zborowski (1889-1932), Soutine's dealer, had sent him to this village, providing him with board and lodging in exchange for sending his work. The painting represents the houses of the Rue de la république seen from the Tins ravine.
