The Tao-tö-king or "The Way and its Virtue" is attributed to Lao-tzeu who, according to Chinese tradition, would be a slightly older contemporary of Confucius. It is one of the most translated works in the world. Its concise obscurity and poetic force have given rise to countless commentaries and inspired interpretations. An important term in ancient Chinese thought, Tao can take on quite different meanings depending on the context. The originality of Lao-tzeu or his posterity is to have made it the principle of spontaneity common to all things, at the same time as an ideal of complete emptiness never attained.
This "philosophical" text played a particularly important role in the history of Chinese civilization. Also, this new edition includes the 81 short texts that make up this collection, rich in aphorisms and paradoxes, illustrated with carefully selected Chinese prints.
