This catalog brings together the nineteen paintings by Spanish painters that the Musée des Beax-arts de Lyon exhibits in its halls or holds in its reserves: from masterpieces such as Francisco de Zurbarán's fascinating Saint Francis or Pablo Picasso's mysterious Demme sitting on the beach, through paintings by Miguel Alcaniz or the master of Santa Clara de Palencia to works attributed to José de Ribera (Lemartyre de saint Barthélémy and Le repentir de saint Pierre), but also paintings by greats such as El Greco, Antonio de Pereda or Juan de Valdès Leal.
For the contemporary period, we must add the works of Eugenio Lucas Padilla, also known as Eugenio Lucas Velázquez, and Mariano Fortuny, not forgetting the fabulous treasure trove of paintings by Pablo Picasso - Femme assise sur la plage, Nu aux bas rouges, Tête de mouton écorchée, Le buffet du Catalan, Vanité and Les musiciens - and Antoni Tapiès' Canapé. This research offers a detailed analysis of each of these works, combining a historical approach that situates the painting in its period, its religious context, so present in Spain, but also the history of the painting itself, with an aesthetic and didactic approach that focuses on the precise analysis of pictorial invariants - composition, color, light...
- and the important details that sometimes go unnoticed, but which are fundamental to a proper understanding of the painting.
