American born in 1953, Charles Ray upsets the canons of sculpture. His unique work has greatly contributed to redefining the contours of plastic figuration. Inspired by the history of sculpture, from Egyptian bas-reliefs to Greek sculpture, Charles Ray was initially a follower of minimal art. In the 1980s, he turned to figuration and created the hyperrealist sculptures that we know him for. He constantly explores the tension between human figure and space; the body of the artist himself is called upon (Plank Piece, 1973), and constitutes the essential material of his creations.
