When [Giacometti] makes those sculptures like people crossing the street, going from one house to another, you can't help saying that these are people who are walking in the street and that you're at a certain distance from them. Pablo Picasso in Françoise Gilot, Carlton Lake, Life with Picasso, London : Virago Press, 1990 [1964], p. 197.
Recently I was at an exhibition by Picasso that I liked very much. There are six or seven large seated figures, two or three travelling acrobats, and portraits of women. They are very clear and simple, and very well drawn [...]. They are the best modern things I've seen in Paris to date and, keeping to this path, he could do some really wonderful things.
Alberto Giacometti, letter to his parents, April 8,1924.
