Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)
Van Gogh's room in Arles, 1889 - Oil on canvas. H. 57,3 ; W. 74 cm; Musée d'Orsay
Van Gogh produced three almost identical paintings on the theme of his bedroom. The first, kept in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, was executed in October 1888 and was damaged by a flood while the painter was hospitalized in Arles. About a year later, Van Gogh decided to make two copies: one, of the same size, is now in the Art Institute of Chicago; the other, in the Musée d'Orsay, was made for his family in Holland and is smaller in size.
