Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, both from the former Soviet Union and born in 1933 and 1945 respectively, number among the world's most important contemporary artists. They have been working closely together since 1989.

Meeting an angel, flying into space, communicating with the cosmos, but also chatting in the communal kitchen, setting up rudimentary toilets on a riverbank, or composing a concert for a fly, the Kabakovs combine the highest spiritual aspirations with a pragmatism tinged with humor and irony. In his early work, Ilya Kabakov stigmatized the pettiness and absurd constraints of an authoritarian regime. Ilya and Emilia then developed more general ideas through fables about the human condition and the search for spirituality.

This book presents 115 works, paintings, drawings, albums and intallations, giving a broad view of the Kabakov's work from 1960s to The Strange City for Monumenta 2014.
