What followed was a life of constant departures: Copenhagen, Pont-Aven, Martinique, Arles and, in 1891, the great departure for Tahiti. "I leave to be quiet, to be free of the influence of civilization. I only want to make simple art, very simple. This "savage in spite of himself" died in the Marquesas Islands on May 8, 1903.
