Léon Monet (1836-1917), brother of Claude (1840-1926), was a colour chemist, industrialist and collector in Rouen and played a decisive role in the artist's career. In 1872, when Monet returned to Le Havre to paint Impression, Sunrise, Léon founded the Société industrielle de Rouen and decided to give active support to his brother and his Impressionist friends. These were the beginnings of a remarkable collection of modern art.
The exhibition brings together around one hundred works, including paintings and drawings by and drawings by Monet, Sisley, Pissarro and Renoir, but also colour books, fabric samples samples, Japanese prints, archival documents and numerous family photographs.
The energetic portrait Claude Monet's energetic portrait of his older brother in 1874 (on the cover) of the deep affection that unites the two brothers, is presented for the the first time ever.
The exhibition definitively places Léon Monet in Claude's biography and shows the two brothers' shared interest in colour. As a man of network, a conqueror of public life and of the industrial world of Rouen, Léon Monet was not only an unfailing supporter of Claude but also an enlightened but also an enlightened art lover, whose singular personality remains to be discovered.
