This album was published for the exhibition Asterix At the Musée de Cluny presented at Museum of the Middle Ages - Thermal baths and Hôtel de Cluny until January 3rd 2010.
Asterix was born fifty years ago. To celebrate the anniversary of the famous comic character Asterix created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the public is invited to the Musée de Cluny to witness an unprecedented encounter between two national monuments.
Thirty original plates from the Asterix albums and the typescripts used in their preparation are on display for the first time in France, in the recently restored frigidarium of the Cluny thermae, the only surviving above-ground Gallo-Roman monument north of the Loire. Most are early or more recent drawings by Uderzo, the artistic partner in the talented Goscinny-Uderzo duo. An excellent opportunity to see how they worked together and to watch the familiar pages take shape.
There is a curious interaction between the building, a survivor from antique Lutetia, and Asterix, a witness to an imaginary antique world. Other objects, such as Goscinny's Keyston Royal typewriter and the first issue of Pilote, are reminders of the complicity between these two comic album designers who conquered the whole world with their character from the Gallo-Roman period.
Outside the building, at the intersection of boulevard Saint-Michel and boulevard Saint-Germain, panels displaying drawings from the Asterix albums beside some most famous masterpieces of Western art are hung on the railing along the museum's garden... a parody or a source of inspiration?
