Snowy rock face, flooded high forest, damp sandbank, shaft of light, silhouettes lost in the landscape: every photograph by Bernard Descamps is an invitation to travel and contemplation. A biologist by training and a tireless walker, he has spent decades crossing Africa, Japan, Madagascar and Iceland, in search of people and landscapes.
In black and white, in square format, his refined work plays with lines, empty spaces and details to create images that are at once simple and vertiginous, where the human figure often appears tiny in the face of nature. Neither reportage nor exoticism: Descamps seeks less to describe the world than to capture its poetry - that suspended moment when light, gesture and the breath of the wind come together.
Portraits, friezes of trees, maritime horizons, flights of birds: each image is a syllable in a long visual narrative about our connection to the Earth. This book offers a sensitive journey through his work, between gentleness, gravity and freedom.
This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Bernard Descamps - Là où souffle le vent, presented at the Musée de Grenoble from 4 April to 23 August 2026.
