This reproduction of the White Bear is a cast of the original statue by the sculptor François Pompon, on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. The most iconic example, however, remains the one on display at the Musée d'Orsay since 1986.
The work reached its zenith at the 1922 Salon d'Automne, when the original plaster cast of the White Bear astonished both the public and the critics. In reaction to the tormented Expressionism of his mentor Auguste Rodin, Pompon opted for a radical simplification of forms, favouring an intuitive grasp of movement over strict geometry.
His depictions of animals, stripped of all superfluous detail, reflect a quest for universal purity. Today, the collection from his studio is preserved in Dijon, whilst this monumental sculpture takes pride of place at the Musée d'Orsay, a true icon of modernity.
