In 1874, a group of dissident painters exhibited their works outside the official circuits. A critic derisively invented the word "impressionism". This event is rightly considered one of the initiating stages of modern art. With these exhibitions, the ecosystem of contemporary art is then put in place: search for scandal, monopolistic intervention of a dealer, opportunistic union of visual artists and avant-garde writers.
This work is based on extremely important documentation and highlights words and testimonies from "first hands" which reveal for the first time the artists' strategy. The echoes with our contemporary times are multiple and surprising to say the least...
