Emile-Frédéric Nicolle produced his first etching at the age of twenty-four. A painter and watercolorist, he was an attentive observer of the changes taking place in his native city of Rouen, which he drew and engraved.
He participated in the 1878 World's Fair and several times in the Salons des Artistes Français in Paris with his etchings. His engraved work can be divided into two parts: on the one hand, his views of the monuments and streets of Rouen bear witness to the old town; on the other, his marine and rural views of Normandy.
It was in Le Tréport that Nicolle drew the cliffs. The seaside resort is picturesquely situated at the mouth of the Bresle River, which cuts through the great cliff face of the Pays de Caux, forming the border between Normandy and Picardy.
In addition to his work, he made his mark on art history as the maternal grandfather of painter, sculptor, and author Marcel Duchamp, painter and cubist engraver Jacques Villon, sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and painter Suzanne Duchamp.
