Hand patinated reproduction on a marble base. Mold made from a print of the original work.
Ceramists, glassmakers and bronze-makers from Lyons used to enjoy a well-deserved reputation throughout Gaul. The bronze workshops published many animal figurines, remarkable for their sap-like style.
The rooster, the attribute of Mercury to which he was generally associated, has been the pretext for many variants of which this one, found at Décines in the suburbs of Lyons, is undoubtedly the most savory.
One admires the rustic simplification of the animal, reduced to elementary traits, but full of vivacity.
