WRITTEN IN FRENCH
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Images birmanes, trésors photographiques du MNAAG at musée Guimet from 18 October 2017 at 22 January 2018.
On the occasion of an exhibition that presents a selection, the entire collection of 19th-century photographs on the Burma of the Guimet Museum is reproduced here. It made it possible to discover the country at the time of the British colonies. It is supplemented by a text by Count Alexandre Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the first complete account of a trip to Burma by a Frenchman published in 1883.
The 193 photographs presented in this book are exceptional images of Burma in the 19th century, during the days of the British colonies. Rare and unpublished bear witness to monuments for some now extinct, scenes of everyday life, memories of dancers or the elegance of the women of the Burmese aristocracy. They invite an exploratory journey that offers a narrative with multiple faces and unexpected landscapes, sometimes wild or refined.
