The Portrait of Albrecht Dürer, painted in 1498, is a milestone between medieval art and the Renaissance. The Flemish artist depicts himself in an elegant pose, wearing a cape and a pair of gloves. The self-portrait was an innovative genre that emerged in the 15th century. Dürer was one of the first artists to pose himself as the main subject of his work. By deliberately hiding his hands, the painter asserted a new status for the artist, practising a liberal art associated with thought and not simply a craft requiring manual skills.
The engraver Emile-Jean Sulpis was a pupil of Cabanel and Henriquel-Dupont. He won the Prix de Rome in 1884, and received numerous awards throughout his career. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts from 1911.
