An assiduous spectator, a true lover of cineclubs and popular cinemas, the cinephile Henri Matisse was passionate about the most original and distant films of his time, from Jean Renoir to Robert Flaherty, from René Clair to F.W. Murnau, from scientific films to Tarzan...
If Matisse legitimately approached cinema as entertainment, his work was decisively influenced by it.
Today's art has made no mistake about it. A number of contemporary artists have already revealed the deep links between the painter, who was passionate about graphic and decorative series, and the image-movement: Jean Michel Alberola, Pierre Buraglio, Henri Foucault, Madeleine Roger-Lacan, Raymond Hains, Jacques Villeglé, Ange Leccia and Alain Fleischer.
Exhibition "Cinématisse : dialogues d'un peintre avec le cinéma" from 19 September 2019 to 5 January 2020.
