Unique in France, the "Chinese Museum" of Empress Eugénie was established in 1863 within the Château de Fontainebleau, one of the imperial residences. The sovereign wanted to exhibit her vast Far Eastern collections in a large and beautiful salon to offer a remarkable place of finesse and intimacy to her summer guests. The works which are still collected there today come both from the imperial storage room, from acquisitions brought together with Emperor Napoleon III since their marriage, from the sack of the Summer Palace in 1860 but also from diplomatic gifts received from the Siamese embassy in Fontainebleau in 1861. It thus remains one of the memories of the important relations during the Second Empire between France and South-East Asia and a place to visit as incredible as it is improbable.
