Far from limiting themselves to the description of reality, realist artists were keen to interpret it, in order to offer the public new keys to reading the world. If this movement, born in the 1830s and 1840s, before taking off during the Revolution of 1848, seems very wise today, Courbet and other painters - Honoré Daumier, Jean-François Millet, Rosa Bonheur, etc. - thought of it as an ostensible and scandalous operation of transgression.

Far from confining himself to France, Bertrand Tillier endeavoured to demonstrate the influence of this movement on an international scale in the years 1860-1870, whether in England, Germany (Hans Thoma, Adolph von Menzel, Wilhelm Leibl, etc.) or in the USSR (Ilya Répine) and the United States (Thomas Eakins or Winslow Homer). Written by one of the foremost scholars of nineteenth-century art and featuring fewer than 330 illustrations, the book offers a captivating analysis of the subversive aesthetic of realism.
