WRITTEN IN FRENCH
Certain encounters represent a founding act in an artist's career; this is the case of that between Pierre Bonnard and Toulouse-Lautrec. It was in fact the first, through his sparkling France-Champagne poster , produced in the spring of 1891, which would guide the second on the path to eternal fame for his lithographic works. Inventor of the modern poster after Bonnard, it is Toulouse-Lautrec who, thanks to his relentless research on the new potential offered by this technique and his many hours spent with lithographic workers, remains the undisputed master today. ; evidenced by his iconic posters of fin-de-siecle Paris, such as Moulin Rouge - La Goulue, Divan Japonese, Jane Avril, Loïe Fuller or Aux Ambassadeurs , without forgetting all those linked to the character of Aristide Bruant. Throughout his life as an artist, Lautrec stood on the fringes of the Impressionists and collaborated with the most prominent or most criticized authors of his time, publishing numerous albums containing special prints.
The exhibition, under the direction of Véronique Serrano and Gilles Genty, is part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Impressionism with the exceptional loan of two masterpieces from the Musée d'Orsay which complete the selection of the 80 rare lithographs, proofs and prints on display, coming from one of the richest collections kept in private hands.
The abundantly illustrated and commented catalog constitutes an essential tool for the study of the artist's lithographic work.
