At the Louvre Museum, a marble monument called the "Cippus of Malta" has been kept since 1864. Its twin is kept in the Valletta Museum, in Malta: the two pieces have been known there since the end of the 17th century and one of them was offered to France by the Grand Master of the Order of Malta .
Famous because of the bilingual inscription, in Phoenician and Greek, engraved on one of the four faces of their base, these two "inscriptions" allowed Abbot Barthélemy to decipher Phoenician in 1758.
The present study cross-references data archaeological, historiographical and epigraphic, in order to decipher these two atypical works in their smallest details and to explore a certain number of questions concerning in particular their typology and their use, but also their dating, their provenance and their history from Antiquity to the nowadays.
