Notre-Dame de Paris almost disappeared. During the terrible fire of April 15, 2019, emotion overwhelmed the world, revealing that the cathedral was everyone's heritage. However, Notre-Dame has never been a national church but, between Church and State, it has imposed itself over time as the cathedral of France.
To understand its place is to unravel its history, which is still poorly known due to the lack of complete excavations and scattered archives. It is to give a voice to its stones, which shaped the Gothic style in the thirteenth century, and also to its bishops, archbishops, canons, minor clerics and society who have made this monument a place of life.
The great historian Claude Gauvard returns to the origins of the construction of the cathedral and gives us its fascinating history, from the Middle Ages to the work of Viollet-le-Duc in the nineteenth century.
