In Japan, they are everywhere fear seizes us: forest, well, dark room of a house, handover of a temple, cemetery, den. Where the cold sweat flows lies fantastic creatures, the yokai. Born at a time when only the weak gleam of the lanterns illuminated the streets at night, the monsters yokai are as varied and fanciful as the human imagination. Giant animals that arise from the depths of the Earth, centuries-old objects that come to life, foxes and badgers enchanting humans, hybrid and facetly beings always ready to play tricks, their representation was set in the 19th century thanks to the wide spread of prints.
These scary and fascinating supernatural creatures are ubiquitous today in Japanese culture. They will be discovered here thanks to the masters of the fantastic print, Yoshitoshi, Kuniyoshi, Kunisada and Sekien, whose works have lost none of their horrifying power.
