The work and its artist

Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004)

"I walked all day long, with a tense mind, trying to take pictures in the streets, as if caught red-handed. ". Henri Cartier-Bresson. Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in 1908 and died in 2004 at the age of 95, he is a major figure of photography in 20th century. The genius of his compositions and his art of capturing the "decisive moment", made him famous. Close to the surrealist movement at its beginnings, Cartier-Bresson is above all a traveller and a reporter who immortalised the history of his time, from the liberation of Paris to the last hours of Gandhi, passing through decolonisation and the Cold War. The artist was also politically involved with the Communist Party, he was an activist and worked for the Communist press. In 1947 he created the Magnum agency, a cooperative photographic agency where the greatest photographers of the years to come would work.
