"I realised that I was working on a vase in exactly the same way as I did on sculptures, and that there was no difference between what I called a sculpture and what was simply an object, a vase!" Alberto Giacometti, interview with André Parinaud, 1962
In the early 1930s, Alberto Giacometti explored two creative fields simultaneously. Alongside the Surrealists, he fashioned enigmatic sculptures known as "Surrealist objects" and, at the same time, created decorative art objects - lamps, andirons and vases - for Jean-Michel Frank, the great Parisian interior designer. This book brings together these two practices, which are all too often treated as separate, yet which are in fact intertwined and mutually enriching in their forms, their themes and even in the very principles of their design.
