Born from the rediscovery of Antoine Bourdelle's clothes and workshop coats, thanks to exceptional loans, the exhibition "The Fabric of the Artist" explores the way in which painters, sculptors and creators of Rosa Bonheur to Pablo Picasso, through Le Corbusier or Foujita, transformed their outfit into a symbol, from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.
Richly illustrated by various documents (sculptures, paintings, photographs, and clothing), the catalogue addresses different themes such as the bohemian myth, the birth of a professional habit, the feminization and masculinization of the locker room or the eccentricities of the artists of the nineteenth through essays of specialists. Focus on major figures (Degas, Klimt, Sonia Delaunay, and of course Bourdelle) plunges us into the intimacy of the workshops and the boldness that have marked the history of modern art.
An essential book to discover how the artist, by his habit, stages himself and reinvents his image.
