Published to mark the bicentenary of photography, this book accompanies the Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection's exhibition Remember Me (7 October 2026 - 18 January 2027) . Its title is taken from a work by Barbara Kruger: an injunction - "Don't forget me" - which encapsulates a fundamental idea of photography, that of the trace left behind, the enduring imprint, that which remains despite the passage of time.

From Gustave Le Gray to Louise Lawler, Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Dora Maar, Cindy Sherman, Wolfgang Tillmans and Zanele Muholi, the works seem to make the same plea: to be recognised, looked at, kept alive by the gaze of the other. For photography is not merely about capturing reality: it demands to be seen so as not to disappear.

This concertina book unfolds as a free composition, to be explored in the manner of a fugue. Nearly two centuries of images resonate with one another, as if each image, deep down, were uttering the same words: remember me.

A specialist in photography, Matthieu Humery is an exhibition curator. He collaborates in particular with Pinault Collection and Luma Arles.
