With this exhibition, the Museum Plantin-Moretus presents the 85 most beautiful old drawings from the Flemish collections. It all forms a stunning and representative overview of who, why and how people drew in these regions in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Some drawings have never been shown to the public before. And a certain number of works can no longer be admired after the exhibition, because they must respect a compulsory long-term rest period in the depository. The exhibition is a unique chance to see some gems side by side, such as Rubens's 12-year-old sketchbook, Antoon van den Wijngaerde's Panorama of Zeeland, 10 meters long, and the extremely rare sketchbook from Italy by sculptor Pieter Verbruggen (which will be exhibited for the very first time). And alongside big names like Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Jan Brueghel, Anthony Van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens or Pieter Coecke van Aelst, the magnificent, rarely shown sheets of lesser-known designers like Jan van Stinemolen, Cornelis de Vos, Jan Boeckhorst, Godfried Maes and Jan Erasmus Quellinus are a surprising discovery.
