From the summer of 1940, throughout the rest of the Free World and in the territories of Africa, Asia and the Pacific rallied to Free France, French and French-speaking artists, writers, intellectuals and scientists, often refugees or persecuted, engaged in a cultural battle to win the hearts and minds of public opinion in neutral and allied countries to the cause of those who refused the defeat of France. Whether they were Free Frenchmen or not, they all contributed to the international influence of French culture during this troubled period. The twenty-three authors selected for this catalog present a panorama of artistic, cultural and scientific production in exile. From architecture to jewelry, from publishing to cinema, from surrealism to the atom, so many subjects as little-known as they are fascinating are illustrated by photographs of the three hundred objects, documents and works of art presented in the exhibition. At the heart of the exhibition is a selection of forty-two commented portraits of artists and intellectuals who worked for the Resistance, giving a new face to extraordinary personalities who have sometimes fallen into oblivion, and reminding us that each person's exile and the way it was experienced are unique.
