Published on the occasion of the exhibition France Viewed from the Grand Siècle. Drawings by Israël Silvestre (1621-1691) from March 15, 2018 to June 25, 2018 at the Musée du Louvre.
Trained as an engraver in the milieu of Jacques Callot, Israël Silvestre soon turned his attention to depicting urban landscapes. His first views illustrate both Nancy, where he was born, and the cities he visited on his travels from Paris to Rome. In his mature works, he shows the capital and its festivities, the cities conquered by Louis XI and the castles of Ile-de-France.
While Silvestre's engravings have been widely distributed, his drawings remain little-known. Since the 18th century, the Louvre has preserved an exceptional collection, which this book presents for the first time.
