Fontainebleau, through the plates devoted to it in Jacques I Androuet du Cerceau's Plus excellents Bastiments de France in 1579, appears as an extension of the sovereign and a new place where the royal figure crystallizes. The depictions show the desire to portray the castle in its full extent and to draw attention to its architectural curiosities, but also to underline the originality of its decorations, the richness of the gardens and its fountains.
It is in this vein that the Album Genévrier is inscribed, a true souvenir album.
Based on the album edited by Claude-François Dénécourt (1788 - 1875), writer, publisher.
Souvenirs de Fontainebleau called Album Genévrier (detail).
