The carver, engraver and enameller Théophile Soyer was first steered towards the fine arts by his father, who had opened his own engraving workshop in Paris. He launched his artistic career at the Salon of 1870, received a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, and a gold medal in 1900. He took over the family workshop in 1896 and was actively involved in the renaissance of painted enamel that began in around 1840 in France.

Classically trained, Théophile Soyer was interested in the artistic movements of his time: his style is characterised by a taste for the arabesque and an abundance of floral motifs, influenced by Art Nouveau, as well as by brilliant colours and transparent effects using translucent enamels.
