Over the last twenty years or so, the Langrois Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey (1804-1892) has established himself among the major figures of early French photography, thanks to a few exhibitions and publications. Painter and draughtsman, archaeologist and architectural historian, scholar and lover of rare plants and birds, he was indeed a pioneer of the daguerreotype, a technique which he mastered perfectly from 1841, and by means of which he delivered a work of almost incomparable quality and scope.
